Roulette layout: differences and advantages

Types

Actually the original roulette wheel was without any zeros but there were people, who could not miss the opportunity to make money on that. So, they added zero and increased the house edge. That is how European roulette was created.

Later American decided that one zero is not really cool and added one more zero. That is how they obtained "double zero" roulette, and increased the house edge even more.

What is house edge?

The house edge is casino's advantage. We know that the house wins when we lose. But the house also wins, when we win. If we play European roulette and we make a straight up bet and win, according to the true odds, we should receive the payout 37/1. But in reality we receive 35/1.

If we bet $100 and win, we receive $3500 instead of $3700. We add $100, which we bet and then subtract $3600 from $3700. We have $100. Then we divide it into 37. We have 2.7%, which is the house edge.

The same story is with the American variant. As they offer 2 zeros, the house edge is 5.26%.

As you might have noticed, the payout for the straight up bet is 35 to 1, while there is only 1 chance in 37 that the ball would hit the correspondent pocket.

You might ask a question, "If there 1 chance in 37 to win, why my payout is 35/1?" Well, that is how the casino makes extra even when it is losing.
